Cruising

Mayo has a spectacular coastline and some truly beautiful inland waterways. Short cruises are available. Killary Cruises offer a 90 minute trip to the mouth of Killary Fjord on a catamaran called "The Connemara Lady". Trips begin just outside Leenane, 40 minutes from Newport.

On the inland Lough Corrib, Corrib Cruises run cruises on board "The Lady Ardilaun" from Ashford Castle to Inchagoil island and Oughterard. Lough Corrib is 60 minutes from Newport.

Island Life

Islands always hold a fascinating lure, retaining historical features and traditional customs longer than the mainland. Added to which, the scenery on Mayo's islands has to be seen to be believed! Achill Island is 30 minutes from Newport and is the largest and is linked to the mainland by a bridge. Clare Island and Inishturk have regular ferries from Roonagh Quay near Louisburgh 45 minutes from Newport.

Horse Riding

Ireland has always been closely associated with the horse and Mayo is no exception. There is a wide variety of approved trekking and tuition available. Terrain varies from beaches to mountain tracks and quite country roads. Mounts are often the sure footed Connemara poise native to this area or other locally bred horses.

Surfing

Several beaches close to Newport are superb for surfing. The most celebrated locations are Achill and Louisburgh. The best conditions for surfing can be found in these areas during the months May to October.

Watersports

For the sailor and yachtsman, who follow the call of flying spray, Glenans sailing centre is within easy reach of Newport and also provides for surfing and water skiing.

Magnificent Blue Flag Beaches

Safe and secluded 'Blue Flag' beaches are within 10-15 min. drive of the town including:

• Louisburgh: Old Head, Carramore
• Mulranny: Mulranny Beach
• Achill: Keel Beach, Dugort, Golden Strand, Dooega Beach
